Post 8: Importance of English 1101
During this term we learned quite a bit of material that helped me become successful in this class. One of the topics we discussed was rhetorical context which helped me to better understand the reader's point of view. This was a huge part of this lesson as it continually encouraged us to write to read. Another topic that we focused on was MLA format which was also a huge part in the lesson and will continue to help myself in future English classes however I do believe this is the least important in the class. The topics we discussed in the class will continue to help me grow in my writing and will help to be a huge success to my ethical career.
Let me explain a little about about rhetorical context. Rhetorical context is the reasoning for why a writer decides to write about a certain topic. In sorts you have to read the room in order to connect the dots with the reader to interest the reader about a certain topic. Being able to write with a rhetorical context allows you to give a better idea to the reader of why you are writing this and who you are writing it too. Being able to have this skill is crucial in order to make sense to any reader outside of only this English class. Imagine you are taking your degree you earn from college to a sales position and need to write a email or a letter to a potential buyer. You'd obviously want to write to the buyer and interest them in what you are selling and explain to them the why and reasoning behind what you are selling. This is a super important topic covered in this class that not just only in a sales position can this be used, but also in talking with people in conversation.
The least important topic I believe covered in this class was MLA format. This may come to a shock for a few of you reading this, but I personally believe that the "citing sources" section of MLA format is a little outlandish. Although it may help me in my college writing career, citing sources in MLA format is not a requirement in any professional writing sections. If you look up a news article from any major news outlet, you will never see any sources citied in perfect MLA format at the end of the page. Let's take this take from NBC news for example:
Actually, I agree with you that the current methods for citation are outdated and that hyperlinks are the way to go. They are so much more efficient and direct, and both MLA and APA will likely go that way in the future; however, for the remainder of your collegiate career you will have to use the old pen and paper based methods. Sorry.
